Importance of Keywords
Search Engine Results
Keywords and Phrases are used within a web page to help the search engines to find and properly index your website within the results pages (SERPS). Google, Bing, Yahoo, and more will send a spider robot to scan out your website and they tag words within your website to put your website into their list of search results. Once they have a good understanding of what your website is about they then try to class - rank your website into a list of importance or power. Each engine out there today has their own special algorithm that they use to determine if a website is important enough to list it in the top ten listings within their index pages. To sum this up they list your website according to how useful and popular it is.
First things first in keeping Google happy: By now most of already know that Google is the top search engine out there today. If you rank well in Google's search pages, then you should do well across the board in other search engines. The way to rank well is to know where and how to use keywords in your website. These keywords are important markers for search engines and you shouldn't be lazy with use and placement.
Using the right keywords, and placing them within your site is crucial, and before you even build your website you have to have some idea on what major words you would like to use for other people to find you in the search engines. Once we have these perfect words we work hard to optimize our sites around those keywords and wait for traffic to pick up. Some of our techniques work, and some do not work at all. When a website owner works on their website they must consider the keyword placement at all times because one little change in word placement, things can change so quickly, and if you're not ready you can lose a lot of traffic and even for some you can lose an income.
The search algorithms of Google, Yahoo, Bing, and others are always changing how they index website's across the Internet, and this is what keeps Webmasters on our toes. These algorithms are almost always top secret, and it is Webmasters like you and I that tend to figure out what the Search engine is up to. Over the past few years I have watched search engines change how they index web sites, and when they change I have to change how I optimize my website, and trust me I have gone through many negative and positive changes, but it was all worth it because I learned more about my website, and the search engines, each time this happened. It is important that you keep up with the latest news on each of the top search engines out there today. If you do not know what is going on with them, then how can you prepare your website for the changes they make?
There are areas of your website that will always carry heavy importance to your website. Optimizing these special areas will anchor you and keep you held down when changes to search engines happen. I am not saying these are 100% effective, but these areas of on page optimization have proven to be a solid source for webmasters to use.
Tags That Work On Page Optimization
What Meta Tags and On Page Tags Work?

-

-
Use your main keyword once in the Heading tag <h1>A list of great keywords</h1>
-
Use your main keyword in your site paragraphs. Try to be very limited on its use and use it were it sounds right.
-
NEVER try to hide keywords by matching the font color to the site background. Google spiders will see it and are likely to penalize you.
-
If you do keyword spam, and do end up in the top 10 that is simply because Google hasn't given you a good going over. It will soon enough and you may see you went from #7 to 53.
-
Stay in focus and remember you are writing for a PERSON and not a search engine spider.
Keyword Spamming Types of Keyword Spam
There are many ways one can keyword spam their website, but we will cover the common mistakes that new site owners make when building their website's. The sad thing is they truly think they are doing good for their website because they do not know the rules of using keywords
First and foremost never ever underestimate Google. They are the gods of search engines and don't you forget it. If you screw up with Google then you've screwed up big time. If you had the opportunity to look the stats of over 500 website's across the Internet you would find that each site shows Google brings them at least 50% of their daily traffic. Can you imagine losing 50% of your traffic in an instant? That could level the website in one single day! Some of you may not have much faith in Google finding out about your keyword spamming techniques, but I assure you, you're wrong, and they will find out. So before you even consider to spam your own website with keywords, ask yourself is it worth it? They know all of the tricks, and I bet they have people sitting at their desks right now thinking up way to spam, just so that they themselves can be on top of the keyword spamming game. They will know if you use CSS to hide keywords on a web page, and they surely know how to count up your keyword ratios on each page to know if you are over stuffing a website. To sum it up think of Google as a God, because in reality when it comes to the success of your website, Google is God. Don't laugh, and those that do not agree with me, that is fine, but take Google and all of its affiliates out of your market right now and tell me what your overall loss was? Even if its only 20% its still to much of a loss for any website these days.
Areas of a website one may consider spamming but should not.
1. Site Title: Why in the world would you want to make a site title that has the same word or words listed over and over again in the title area? This is the title that is shown in the result pages with a little snippet or description of your website. This is the area the world will see first so why would you make it look desperate? Google, Bing, Yahoo, and others have word count rules for this title area. This rule changes from time to time, but I can safely say here right now you should not use more than the same keyword twice in the title. I would use it once, and find smart ways to use my keywords in my title. See the examples below.
The keyword list - Paint Shop Pro, Backgrounds, Patterns, PSP X2, Fills, Graphics
Good Title: Paint Shop Pro Graphic Background Patterns for PSP X2 Fills.
Bad Title: Free Paint Shop Pro PSP Backgrounds Patterns Fills for the Paint Shop Pro PSP X2 Download
The good title results - The flow of the title easy to read by a human, it is clear and to the point. I can see from the title that this page offers Paint Shop Pro Backgrounds to use as PSP Fills. The keywords are not overly used, and are placed in the order of importance.
The bad title results - The flow of the title just does not work for me as a reader. Sure it is stuffed with juicy keywords, but that is what I do not want to do. I do not want to spam my keywords. The bad title also is using stop words that have no value at all. Free, the, and Download, are pretty much invisible words these days. I wasted space using those words. You can see that the word PSP was used twice, Paint Shop Pro was also used twice, and wasted filler words like for.
2. Site Description: Again the same thing as the title. Why would you want to spam the description as this is the area that the world will see first in the search results. Did you know if Google sees a problem with your description tag, it will take a snippet of text from you website and place it in the description area themselves? Yes, they will, and do you want that happening to every page on your website? I think not!
Using the same keyword list above I will show you examples of the good and the bad.
Good Description: Quality Paint Shop Pro Graphic Backgrounds, Patterns, and fills for PSP X2. Offering special occasion and holiday graphics.
Bad Description: Offering free Downloads of Paint Shop Pro PSP Backgrounds Patterns Fills for the Paint Shop Pro PSP X2
The good description results - The flow of the description is easy to read, and it clearly states what I will find at that page. The word offering is actually shows we have something for our visitors there. I used all of my main keywords in a easy to follow description.
The bad description results - The first few words are wasteful words, and the flow of the description is choppy. The use of the keywords here is spammy considering I used keywords twice in the same description.
3. Site Headings: Every decent website should make use of the <h1> <h2> <h3> tags. These areas are excellent for section titles on a web page. Example if you have a page about Backgrounds, you will want to have sections such as Using Backgrounds, another section on samples of the backgrounds, and then maybe a section on how to organize the backgrounds.
Using the same keywords above here are examples of the good and the bad for headings use.
Good <h1> heading: Using Paint Shop Pro Backgrounds
Bad <h1> heading: Background Use
The good heading results - I was able to make a solid statement, and use multiple keywords in such a small, but important area. My visitors will know this section is about using Paint Shop Pro Backgrounds.
The bad heading results - It is not that bad, but the heading is not very descriptive. I only used one keyword, but wasted space on a word that is not very descriptive or valuable.
4. Site Paragraphs or Content: Of course each section of my web page should have a few paragraphs to explain the sections, and to offer helpful information to my visitors. This is an area where many new website owners spam their keywords, without any real consideration to the flow of the content their writing.
Using the same keywords above here are examples of the good and the bad content use.
Good Short Paragraph: We use Paint Shop Pro to design graphic backgrounds for website design, Scrapbooking, candy wrappers, and more. The backgrounds were made with our PSP X2 version are available for download. Please note that the files should be extracted to your patterns folder, and can be used as PSP Fills.
Bad Short Paragraph: You can download these backgrounds and use them as fills in Paint Shop Pro PSP X2 patterns.
The good paragraph results - I clearly used several of my keywords, but in a way that could be read by a human visitor. I was able to explain that I used the program to make the backgrounds, and they can be used in several areas of design, and the types of design would be valid relevant keywords. I also was able to use my keywords to show what the visitor must do with the files for them to work.
The bad paragraph results - It is not that bad if you know your visitors is a Paint Shop Pro guru, and would not need any information at all on how to use your files. The keywords are there, but they just sound wrong!
The goal is to find the right keywords and phrases that will attract quality traffic to your website and to use them properly throughout your website. Remember there is always someone out there that wants YOUR TRAFFIC so you must stay on top of things weekly or even daily. If you follow the steps above you will naturally gain your rank in the scheme of things, and it should hold. If you start playing around with spammy keywords, I can assure you failure. I hope this page helped you understand more about on page optimization and how you can prevent keyword spam on your website's.
